Description

Soviet republics' style flags for China's autonomous regions, as well as for Hong Kong, Macao and hypothetical communist Taiwan.

↖ Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region
↑ Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
↗ Taiwan

← Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region
→ Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

↙ Tibet Autonomous Region
↓ Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
↘ Macao Special Administrative Region

[see also my previous proposal.]

1. AUTONOMOUS REGIONS
1.a. COLOURS

colour scheme is based mainly on the "Five Races" flag. i've found two different assignments [here and here]:

(1)
red = Han Chinese
yellow = Manchurians
blue = Mongolians
white = Tibetans
black = Muslims [Uyghur + Hui]

(2)
red = Manchurians
yellow = Han Chinese
blue = Mongolians
white = Muslims
black = Tibetans

but i rather believe the (1) is true, because the red stripe is atop the flag so it would be logical for it to symbolize the most prominent nationality - Han Chinese. also, the main colour on the flag of Manchukuo is yellow, not red, so it's more likely that yellow was to symbolize Manchurians [although the colours there have very different denotations, including Japanese and Koreans].

anyway, i tried to remain faithful to both assignments, but mainly to the (1).

the main problem was that in the "5 races flag" the Zhuang nationality was not represented. another problem was that in this flag one colour was to represent both Uyghur and Hui nationality and in nowaday China they have two separate autonomous regions.

i solved the first problem by assigning to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region white colour, since it's name is to translate into "Western Expanse" and Chinese assigned white colour to west.

the second problem was solved by adding distinctive patterns to the flags of Uyghur and Hui.

Tibet is represented by both black and white.

X Uyghur AR is also both white and black.

N Hui AR is both white and red, because Huis are differentiated from Han [red] almnost only by the religion - Islam - and according to assignment (1) white colours from the "5 races flag" was for Muslims.

1.b. MOTIVES

i tried to make these flags as neutral and acceptable for communist gov't, yet as natural and characteristical for each region as possible.

for the Uyghur flag i tried to omit the well-known, but very strong East-Turkestan flag. i've chosen another traditional emblem associated with this nationality - an eight-pointed star, visible on older flags. i've made it into a repetitive pattern.

the Mongolian flag has simply a wide blue stripe and a narrow white one added to prevent the red and blue fields to touch each other [because of the alternation rule]. it also made this flag have all colours visible on other older Inner Mongolia flags.

the Hui flag motive is simply the Chinese logogram 回 (Hui) repeated.

Tibetan flag has snowy mountains.

designing the flag for Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was the hardest... eventually i just put ocean waves [because it's the only autonomous region which has access to the ocean] and mountains [because this region is mountaineous].
there are also other flags designed or found by others, you can read about them here and here [the tenth image].

2. TAIWAN

this hypothetical flag is just the communist Chinese flag surrounded by waves, since Taiwan is an island. as simple as that.

3. SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGIONS

these flags have both a vertical stripe. their colours refer to the flags of former owners of Hong-Kong [United Kingdom] and Macao [Portugal].
